Pizza was delicious. Did take out. They have you check the pizza before you pay. Everyone was very nice. Clean and efficient kitchen. Will definitely go back.
1st visit. Had to check on the great reputation. I grew up in NJ and have high expectations for pizza. I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered a large to make sure I had leftovers. The pizza was so tasty, I almost ate half of it myself. Leftovers are best warmed in the oven. That's the only down side.
The clam pizza was very good. The crust just the right moisture and crisp. The crust is supposed to be somewhat burnt..it is part of the style of this 92 year old pizza. . The pricing was very fair. They have imported italian beer and one local rotating craft beer on tap. My second time there and will return.
This Waterbury franchise is a worthy knockoff of the great New Haven pizzeria. The ovens look to be faithfully replicated, and the dining room is modern. The pies are excellent eaten in, I don't recommend takeout just because Pepe's pizza has to be eaten hot out of the oven to be appreciated. The crust seems to be reliably thicker than the original, not a good or bad thing, just as tasty. The true test is a clam pie, and the one I've had there had the magnificent taste and texture, better in fact than one I had on a busy night on Wooster St. I knocked off one star on the rating cause the clams were not as generous as on Wooster St...a small thing they should fix. I'm sure I'll return if they maintain the quality, saving the long pilgrimage south. Three cheers for New Haven pizza in Waterbury.
Thus place gets busy, and orders can take some time, but the pizza quality is excellent. Menu is really focused on pizza with no sides or other main dishes except for salad. Friendly service. Good for families.
